December 2007

December 10, 2007 2:12 PM
Florida and Disney! Kaya also took her first big vacation in December! Her parents took her to Florida to go to Disney World and also to visit her Uncle John and friends. The family left early on Sunday December 9 to board the autotrain for the trip to FL. It was Kaya's first time on a train, and her first trip out of state! Once on the train, Mommy and Daddy quickly learned that some things, such as walking around a fast moving train and trying to eat in the dining car, are really hard with a baby! Especially a very wiggly and active baby! But it was still a fun way to travel. Monday morning, the family was able to check in to Disney's Port Orleans resort early, and went to the restaurant to get lunch. However, Kaya wasn't happy sitting in the Bjorn and wouldn't let Daddy eat his lunch, so they ended up bringing food back to the room instead. Then they were going to head out to the parks, but were so tired that they all took a long nap first. That evening, they went to Epcot. This was the first time that Kaya's parents had ever driven to any of these parks - they usually took the buses before they had Kaya. So it was quite interesting as they had to learn their way around the Disney property - they definitely got lost a few times! It was also the first time they ever had to walk so far to the gates - those parking lots were huge!

Disney trip -part 2 So after entering Epcot, Kaya got to ride her first ride, which was Nemo and Friends at the Seas. Kaya seemed to enjoy the ride and was quiet and calm the whole time. After that, they visited the manatee exhibit, since Kaya's nickname before she was born was Manny the Manatee. Sometimes her parents still refer to her as the manatee. After leaving the seas, the family walked around the world showcase so Mommy and Daddy could get dinner in Japan, and Daddy could get soft pretzels in Germany. Those are the best pretzels in the world by the way (and that means the entire world, not just Disney world). Epcot closes at 9, so the family intended to go to the Magic Kingdom next since it was open until Midnight. However, after taking the monorail to the transportation center, they realized they were too tired! So they took it back to Epcot again and headed home to the hotel.

Disney Part 3 On Tuesday, the family went to the Magic Kingdom. It was very nicely decorated with all the Christmas decorations. Kaya got her picture taken with Daddy on Main Street, and then she got to ride a few rides. She rode the TTA, during which the first half Daddy held her and she was smiling and laughing as she looked all around outside. However, once the ride passed through the dark space mountain, Kaya was very very unhappy! She does not like the dark! So Mommy had to hold a not as happy Kaya after that. Kaya then napped while her parents took turns riding space mountain. She also got to ride Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion, both of which she mostly slept during, and Snow White, during which she stayed awake. Mom and Dad were very proud of Kaya and hope she will continue to like or at least tolerate rides! After a fun day at the Magic Kingdom, the family headed over to Epcot for awhile.

Merry Christmas! Kaya's mom has been bad about updating her journal this past month! But it was a great month for Kaya. She has become very social recently both with people and with her toys. She still loves the puppy bears, but is more interested in smiling and laughing at mommy and daddy now. She also still loves to play with Freddy, especially to chew on his wings and legs. Actually, Mommy and Daddy suspect she may be teething slightly because she immediately chews on everything she can get in her hands - her hands, other people's hands, blankets, clothes, etc. And she smiles the whole time. Another new habit is the constant drooling she does. Mommy still doesn't put drool bibs on Kaya, but she will have to start wearing them soon. Kaya is also starting to show a great interest in food. When Mommy and Daddy are eating, she watches avidly, and even gets a bit jealous and cries if she hasn't been fed recently herself! Mommy was hoping to put off introducing solid foods to Kaya until she was 6 months old, but she may have to start sooner. She'll see what the doctor says at Kaya's next doctor appt! Kaya is pretty awake and active all day lately. she usually will take 1 good nap which Mommy appreciates. In the last few weeks she finally started losing some of her baby hair, but she still has plenty of hair growing in. Mommy thinks she will have a baby mullet soon. nice!!

Kaya had her first snowboarding trip to Blue Mountain today! Kaya hung out in the lodge with both Grandmas while Mom, Dad, Grandpa Martin, Uncle John, and Jessie went out skiiing and boarding.

Starbucks A random note on Starbucks. Kaya has been many places in her young life - the malls, the zoo, breweries, beer fests, parties, visiting relatives, disney, trains, etc..but one of the places she has been most often is Starbucks! Mostly the ones in various barnes and noble bookstores, but also the mall ones. This is because Starbucks is one of Mommy's favorites! Starbucks or Coffee may very well be Kaya's first word!!

Kaya has been sleeping from about 11pm-5am every night! The whole family is appreciating the extra rest. Tonight Grandma and Grandpa Martin are going to hang out with Kaya while Mommy and Daddy go out to dinner with Uncle John to celebrate his birthday.

A Note on the Puppy Bears. The Puppy Bears are the mobile that is part of Kaya's pack and play. When we first saw this mobile, we thought it was the silliest thing ever - no batteries, so it doesn't play music or spin on its own - you have to manually move it. We spent so much time making fun of it, we almost didn't bother to set it up. Well, go figure, Kaya LOVES this thing. She loves the Puppy Bears. She laughs and smiles and tries to talk to them all the time. I am pretty sure they are talking back to her. She will even stop crying to smile at them. They are her best friends.

What are Puppy Bears anyway? Well, Mommy thinks they look like Bears. I mean, come on, they have no tails. But Daddy thinks they look like dogs, based on how they are sitting. Since agreement on the animal could not be reached, Mommy and Daddy decided to name them either "Bear Dogs", "Teddy Dogs" or "Puppy Bears". And that is the story of how this randomness came about.

Kaya had her 2 month appt today! She's up to 11 pounds 8 ounces, and 23 3/4 inches. She was happy for most of the appt and was smiling at and gurgling to the doctor the entire time. She wasn't too happy when the nurse gave her 4 shots though! But she recovered quickly and was smiling at people in the waiting room on the way out.

Kaya has a new best friend! It's a Clifford the Big Red Dog balloon that is bigger than she is. She talks to him as much as she talks to the Puppy Bears now. Like the Puppy Bears, Clifford is a stoic sort who doesn't say much back.

Double Digits! Kaya is more "assertive" now. Especially at night!

Kaya is 10 weeks old now. She's starting to interact with some of her toys alot more. She's been chewing on poor Freddy the Firefly alot, and she likes to hang out in her bouncer and play with the toy bar too. And she's really having a great time playing on her playmat now, which has a ton of hanging animals to interact with. Up until now she kinda just layed on the playmat. And she loves to put her hands and her shirt in her mouth when she can. Definitely getting more active, and fun to watch!! She still absolutely hates tummy time, but we're working on it. Oh, she also used the bumbo for the first time this week. she's okay in it for a few minutes, but she gets tired of it pretty quickly.

Kaya went to the zoo for the second time today. And she was even awake for part of it! Mommy bought a membership, so Kaya is going to be visiting the zoo often over the next year. Kaya keeps smiling and talking more every day now. She's definitely trying to communicate something!

Kaya figured out how to suck her thumb today. Up until now she usually would try to stuff her whole hand in her mouth, and end up just trying to suck on her knuckles. yay for the thumb!

Happy Thanksgiving! Kaya started her holiday at home where, while checking out the puppy bears, she laughed like an adult for the first time. She literally made a hee hee hee sound. It was very cute! Then she had her first big car trip across the state to see relatives for Thanksgiving dinner. She loved going through the tunnels on the turnpike too because the lights in the tunnel made the inside of the car seem like a disco. Her eyes were very big when this was happening. Then she had Thanksgiving dinner with lots of family and got to meet more family members too! Thanksgiving dinner was wonderful and was held at her Great Aunt and Uncles home. She spent her first night away from home at her Great Grandparents house. Luckily Mom and Dad brought her pack n play so she had a familiar place to sleep. She'll be ready for turkey next year (maybe)!

Fri, Nov 23, 2007 6:35 PM
Kaya saw her first snow today! It snowed overnight at her Great-Grandparents house. She wasn't allowed to play in it though!

Sat, Nov 24, 2007 6:33 PM
The last few days, Kaya has been talking in 'complete' baby sentences or possibly paragraphs. It's so much fun watching her try to tell us stuff!

Here's Kaya's first entry! She's 8 weeks old today. Over the last week she has started to smile a ton and even laugh a little. She also loves to stare and smile at the "puppy dogs" on the mobile above her changing table. She has started to hold her head up really well, and also reaches out to grab things, especially mommy's shirt and hair.

Wed, Oct 31, 2007 10:30 AM
Kaya slept over 6 hours last night! For the third night in a row. We also carved a pumpkin for her first Halloween. She was a little afraid of it!

Wed, Oct 31, 2007 10:00 PM
On Halloween night, Kaya dressed up as Tigger, and so did Mommy and Daddy. The whole Tigger family went trick or treating over to Grandma and Grandpa Criddle's house, and also across the street to the Hanson's. Kaya got a Halloween pencil and a Reese's Peanut Butter stick as treats.
