First Cruise - Emerald Princess to the Caribbean

This vacation started out crazy, as Kaya, Mommy and Daddy spent over 7 HOURS on a plane to get to Florida. When we got to the airport that morning, it was lightly snowing, but we had an early flight and got boarded and in our seats by 7:30, no problem. The problem started when it started snowing harder, and peopld who work at the airport couldn't get there due to the weather. Then we couldn't get a push back because we had to wait for a plow. Then we had to get in line to get de-iced. Then we finally made it to the runaway (3 hours later) and the runway was deemed to be in unsafe condition, so we drove back to the gate! Then we finally pushed back again, got de-iced, and were allowed to take off in a zero visibility blur of snow. Definitely the scariest take off ever for us.

But through all of this Kaya was so well behaved. She read books and played with stickers, ate snacks, and was so quiet that some people didn't even realize she was on the plane until the 4th hour! And even then, she just wanted to stand on the seat and wave at them. We were so proud (and thankful) that she was such a great kid during this - because we were way stressed!

Once we made it to Florida, everything was smooth sailing. Kaya loved running around the big cruise ship and going up and down the stairs and the hallways. She liked swimming at various beaches on the islands we visited, and she especially liked the "taxi" we took in St. Thomas. Basically a van pulling what looked like the type of vehicle you'd take on safari. We sat in the back, and every time we would go over a bump, Kaya would say "Wheeee!".

On the boat itself, we had three connecting balconies, so Kaya loved running back and forth to go to Uncle John's "house" or Nanae and PopPop's house.

Words

Some new words Kaya has used in the last month or so:
Motorcycle (she loves to tell Mommy when she sees or hears them on the road
Teradactyl. best dino ever.

she also loves to point out yellow birds at the bird feeder, yellow cars on the road, and yellow school buses! and water fountains (the kind in lakes).

She is in a size 7 shoe now and wearing pink and white saucony sneakers - her first official pair of running shoes. and she is pretty fast.

Mommy entered her in a disney race in January - it's 100 yards for 1-3 year olds. let's see how she does!
Kaya has been having a great spring and summer. In May she went to Baltimore for the first time and got to visit the aquarium, science center, and children's museum. She spent 2 nights there. She also did very well dining out with Mommy and Daddy, and they learned that she can drink through a straw - and that she loves milkshakes. She has also been talking alot more - she uses tons of words now, and even some short sentences. She says "I wuv you Gui-gess" to the cat while she chases her and tries to pull her tail. She also loves to sit and read to herself which is very cute. She loves to order Mommy and Daddy around, telling them to sit down, and "push" when she wants them to move somewhere specific.

Daddy taught her to say Boom Boom Pow after the black eyed peas song, but Kaya says "Boom Boom Cow" and means it - as she brought Daddy her puzzle piece of a cow right after she said it.

In July, Kaya went to the beach with her cousins and parents and grandparents, and she loved the water and the sand! She wanted to run directly into the waves, and didn't want to leave the water at all even when she started to look blue. Mommy was hoping she'd be at least a little afraid of the waves, but no such luck!

More stuff

Kaya also refuses to eat unless she gets to feed herself with a spoon. even if that means smearing it all over her high chair. She's also tall enough now to unlock the gates on the porch, open up all drawers in the kitchen, and take things off of countertops and other high surfaces. it's been very eventful at home. ha ha.
she also HATES the swiffer wetjet and anything else that makes noise (except for the vacuum, which she looooooves). if she sees something that makes noise, she shakes her finger at it and says quite sternly - "no noise. no noise". This includes but is not limited to: Elmo, the swiffer wetjet, the power drill, a red fire extinguisher that eerily resembles elmo, the vacuum at school, a few puzzles, and the coffee grinder.
Last night while Mommy was singing to Kaya, Kaya tried to put her binky (which she calls bee-bee) in Mommy's mouth. guess Kaya doesn't like Mommy's singing voice!
If Kaya hears good music, she immediately starts to break it down and dances and spins like a crazy person. Kaya is already the best dancer in the house!
Kaya also said "Guiness" yesterday. Isn't guiness a lucky cat!?

Bad Mommy

Mommy has been delinquint in blog entries lately! sorry!

Kaya has been doing well. She added more words to her vocab - especially 2 syllable words like cracker, pretzel, flower, and of course bubbles. and she is starting to use 2 word sentences on occasion too - like Bye Bye da-da, and cars go bye bye. things like that. she also has started actually saying PLEASE instead of just signing 'please'. that has been refreshing. :)

Have I written about the bubble obsession? It's been insane. Kaya talks about bubbles non stop and has even woken up in the middle of the night to say "bubbles. bubbles" before falling immediately back to sleep. Kaya got a bubble gun for east from her grandparents, and she quickly learned how to use the bubble gun on her own, dip it in the bubble solution, and use bubbles to entertain the cats! Kaya's grandparents also have a very nice video of her blowing bubbles, getting frustrated, and saying something at the end that sounds interestingly similar to "G-damn bubbles"! as a side note, mommy and daddy don't use that particular curse, so we don't think that's what she meant!!!
Kaya also loves to draw with sidewalk chalk in the basement or outside if it's nice enough. and she loves to dig in the dirt beside mommy and daddy when they plant flowers. She's really enjoying the fact that spring is here.
Other fun stuff:
Kaya's hair is now long enough to fit in a ponytail.
Kaya's favorite foods lately are chicken, pizza, oranges. she even eats whole apples by herself now!
Kaya loves to stand up on her chair when Mommy isn't looking, and then laugh hysterically when she gets "caught". The look on her face is something that I wish I could record forever. she know's she's being bad, and she is so damn proud of herself.
Kaya loves to hide under the covers and say "Kaya? Kaya? - basically pretending she's hiding from herself or playing peek a boo with herself. very cute.
When she showers (no baths for Kaya!) she likes to take the soap and clean the shower walls, saying "clean clean clean the whole time". We have a fight every single time she gets out of the shower though - first she doesn't want to get out, then she doesn't want to get dried off, then she doesn't want her hair dry, and last, she doesn't want that diaper on.!
A new thing for Kaya is carrying around a bunch of bibs in her arms, like they are a blankey or something like that. she won't actually wear them as bibs, but she loves to carry them around.
Mommy didn't hide eggs for Kaya this easter because Kaya was (and is) more than happy to just take the eggs apart and put them back together again over and over. what a great 'toy'.
Apparently Kaya is learning things at daycare, because she taught mommy a whole new way of singing "Wheels on the Bus" and "Twinkle Twinkle little star" complete with hand motions. and she started blowing kisses too!

18 month stats

Kaya is 22.5 pounds and 32.5 inches. And she's been in size 3 diapers for almost a year now!

The drive home

One day recently, Mommy looked in her rearview mirror to see Kaya with her blanket over her head. Then she heard "Boo!". "Ha ha Ha" from the backseat. Kaya played Peek-a-boo with Mommy for part of the drive home :)

Another day, Kaya kept lifting up her sippy cup (so Mommy could see it in the rear view mirror) saying "up up up". It's only a matter of time until that cup hits Mommy in the head.

Happy 18month birthday

Kaya is 18 months old today! To celebrate, Mommy and Kaya went to the Please Touch Museum.. Kaya LOVED all the fun activities there. She especially liked shopping in the mini supermarket and checking out the Alice in Wonderland maze. Plus she had pizza for lunch - always happy.

Training

Kaya used her "big girl" potty twice this weekend! Not officially training her yet, but when she shows interest, she gets to sit in the special seat. LOL.

List of Words

Mommy is trying to keep track of the words Kaya is using, so here goes:

-Cat, Dog, Bear, Mouse, Moose "Moo", "Baa", "Neigh". And Bug (For the lady bug book)
- Water, Walrus, Rabbit, Moon (for the book Goodnight Moon), and Book.
- Elmo, Mama, Dada, and No.
- Shoes
-"Dis" and Dat.
- Kaya
- Hi, Bye, and Night-night
- Work - because Mommy is always telling her that this is where Dada is! (and it's true..)
- Mess - anytime she drops something on the floor, it's uh oh. mess. uh oh. Kaya is OCD about cleaning just like her relatives!!
- Nose
- Mouth
- Eye
-Bird

First Sentences

Over the last week, Kaya has said two "sentences"! Okay, so they are both short, but we're very proud anyway.
She pointed to the flower on her shirt and said "Dis a flower".
And she also said "I don't know" many times. Given that her favorite word lately is "no" we don't really know if she knows what she's saying - probably not!! but it's cute!!

Tickle Me Elmo - banished

Kaya LOVES Elmo. But the Tickle Me Elmo has proven to be too much for her with his loud, crazy antics. She's afraid of him. So Daddy had to hide him in Mommy's closet - up on the shelf, facing the back wall, for awhile. One night Mommy was sick of Kaya trying to pull diapers out of the diaper pail, so she put Elmo on top to guard it for awhile. And that worked! But later that night, Kaya picked up Elmo and pointed to the bedroom door. Then she went to the closet and tried to open that door. Then she basically 'told' Mommy to put elmo back up on the shelf!

so that's where Elmo stays now. But Kaya likes to visit him several times a day and say Elmo night-night. Just to make sure he's ok. :)

Actual Snow

It snowed for real finally - over 6 inches - and Kaya loved going outside to play in it! Even at 8pm, she kept saying hat, hat hat to Daddy, who finally got her the hat and then figured out that she was trying to tell us she wanted to go outside! So they went out and walked around in the snow for awhile. Kaya loved it - even though she had to wear her snowsuit (which was super cute, by the way). The next morning, Mommy pulled Kaya all around on the sled in the backyard and around the house, and Kaya loved that too. Mommy took lots of pictures.

More Stomach Flu updates

Kaya seems better and is even eating again today! But Mommy got the stomach flu really bad last night and is pretty much down for the count. Daddy even stayed home from work today to take care of both his girls. And his ps3. While they slept of course!

First Stomach Flu

Kaya got her first stomach flu (thanks daycare) in the middle of the night. It was certainly a new experience for her parents too! She's been really lethargic and not eating, so Mom and Dad are watching her very carefully.

Walrus, visitors and a playdate

Today Kaya said "Walrus". Time to take her to the aquarium! She's been saying more and more words and it's really fun. Of course, "no" is still her favorite word..especially when she doesn't feel like eating something!
Kaya had some of her great aunts and uncles and grandparents visit from pittsburg this morning. To greet them properly Kaya dressed up in her Pittsburg steelers cheerleader outfit. We all know who Kaya will be cheering for on Superbowl sunday!
Then Kaya's friend Morgan came over for a playdate in the evening. and Kaya's parents got to finally see their friends too!

Eye teeth

2 more top teeth are on the way in!

14 down, 6 to go!

Words

New words for Kaya recently include "rabbit" and "Kaya" with the K actually pronounced. She also loves to say NO to Mommy. already!

Diapers, Laundry and Llamas.

In addition to throwing out her trash, Kaya loves to carry her dirty diapers over to the diaper pail and put them in! The only tough part is convincing her to leave them there. :) One day Daddy found about 10 clean dish towels in there too!
She also loves throwing clean wash clothes in the hamper in the bathroom closet. And the other day she tried to pick up the (heavy) vacuum and use it!

On Monday Mommy and Kaya got stuck in a snowstorm coming home from work and decided to stop at Barnes and Noble until the traffic cleared out. Kaya loved running around, playing with the Thomas train set, organizing all the stuffed animals on chairs, and saying hi to random people. She came home with a stuffed unicorn, a picture book with animal faces, and her new favorite book - Llama Llama mad at Mama! She loves the Llama Llama books and will point to them and say "Mama mama mama" over and over again until someone reads them to her. They are pretty funny books too. :) with great pictures!

Trash

Kaya now will throw her trash away in the kitchen trash can all by herself! Mommy was pretty surprised when Kaya picked up her string cheese wrapper, ran to the kitchen, opened the cabinet and threw the wrapper into the trash = because she never showed Kaya how to do this! this just shows you how much kids pay attention to what you do!
Kaya also loves to imitate whatever mommy and daddy are doing = she wants to "help" vacuum, she will try to help Daddy or Mommy wipe the floor, etc. We hope this cleaning interest lasts!

Happy New Year!

On New years Eve, Daddy changed Kaya's bed into a toddler bed. She really seemed to like being able to climb in and out by herself! And she never liked being in the crib anyway. Grandma C got to test drive Kaya's sleeping in this bed while Mom and Dad were across the street at a NYE party. Kaya took a good 2 hour nap in the bed, but still ran out to see Mommy and Daddy when they got home at 11! After that we all celebrated the new year together.
